Foam Roller Buying and Use Guide

Use this practical guide to decide what fits your workout routine, space and budget. Recommendations are based on general equipment-selection principles, not personal product tests.
Know what it can and cannot do
Foam rollers are commonly used for self-massage and movement preparation. They are not a substitute for diagnosing injuries or treating persistent pain.
Choose texture and firmness
A smooth, moderate-density roller may feel more comfortable for someone starting out. Deeply textured or very firm options can feel intense; greater discomfort does not mean better results.
Check length and storage
Longer rollers support more positions but require more storage space. Compact rollers are easier to travel with, though they may be less versatile.
Use it conservatively
Avoid direct pressure over joints, injured tissue or areas that cause sharp pain. If you have a medical condition, ask a qualified clinician whether foam rolling is appropriate.
