Choosing an Exercise Mat for Home Workouts
Use this practical guide to decide what fits your workout routine, space and budget. Recommendations are based on general equipment-selection principles, not personal product tests.
Match the mat to the activity
Mobility work, yoga and floor strength sessions put different demands on a mat. A yoga mat prioritizes grip and stability; a thicker exercise mat may feel nicer for kneeling but can make balancing less stable.
Check material and cleaning
Look at the manufacturer’s cleaning directions and whether the surface tolerates your floor and footwear. Some materials retain odors or degrade under heat or direct sunlight.
Plan for storage
Roll-up mats fit into narrow closets; folding mats can stack flatter. Measure both the unfolded workout area and the storage spot.
Focus on a secure surface
Avoid mats that slide across the floor. Follow the maker’s instructions for use, cleaning and replacement if edges curl or the surface deteriorates.
